Finding, Sourcing and Creating Oddities

(An audience-participatory panel and discussion on how to find Oddities, what they might be, why people like them, and what an aficionado of the unusual might really enjoy. )

“Oddity, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. What one person rejects as lunacy, another reveres as truth.”
― Philip Gulley

As people who’ve loved the unusual, fascinating, and eccentric all our lives, we fell in love with Oddities early in life. In this interactive panel and discussion, we’ll go over some of our favorite questions and get your input and thoughts. What exactly is an Oddity? Who decides what an “Oddity” is, and how do you find them, create them, curate them?

Do you have to travel to roadside attractions? Are Oddities something you can buy, or are they bigger than one person? Can they be made, or do they have to be found?

What kind of people create the unusual things which charm our hearts and surprise our minds? What inspires the sort of outlandish peculiarity which makes people stop, stare, take pictures, and sometimes open a souvenir shop?

In our own pursuit of eccentricities, we’ve run Goblin Markets, Totally Normal Events, Misfit Markets, Halloween Markets (of course!) and all manner of singularitudes. In this interactive discussion, we’d like to welcome your ideas and opinions as we discuss the marvelous universe of Oddities and related Weirdnesses

Some of our vendors and creators spend all their time around Oddities (and we don’t just mean the customers). Some of us ARE oddities ourselves. Do you have to be strange to collect and admire these things? Or do you just need an appreciation for the out-of-the-ordinary?

Bring your own questions! Bring your own stories! We’d love to share!
